This list ranks the hotels known to Wikidata by the year they opened, oldest first. Of the 109,701 hotels Innpedia reads from Wikidata, 9,138 have a recorded year of opening or inception.[1][2] The earliest recorded is Saint George's Abbey, Längsee, 1001, in Austria. The earliest on each continent: Europe, Saint George's Abbey, Längsee (1001); Asia, Takahan Ryokan (1075); North America, Hilton Santa Fe Historic Plaza (1625); South America, Patios de Cafayate (1740); Africa, Hotel de La Poste (1850); Oceania, Ashcott Station Homestead (1800).
Method
A hotel's year is the earliest date Wikidata gives for its official opening; where it gives none, the earliest date of inception. Hotels with neither are left out, and so are years before 1000, which in this data are ruins, ancient inns or a century stored as a year. Equal years share a rank, and within a year the better-known hotel — by the number of Wikipedia language editions with an article on it — comes first.[1][2]
The list includes hotels that have since closed: 258 hotels have a recorded date of closure, shown in the Closed column.[3] For a building later converted into a hotel — a castle, abbey or palace — Wikidata's inception is often the date of the building, not of its first use as a hotel. Some early dates are stored only to the century or millennium and are shown as the year Wikidata stores. The years are as recorded; they have not been checked against other sources.
