The Motel Inn in San Luis Obispo, California, United States, was the first "motel" in the world, and the origin of that word, from "Mo-Tel", which is a portmanteau "hotel" by combining the words "motor hotel". Originally known as the Milestone Mo-Tel, it opened on December 12, 1925, and closed in 1991.

The motel opened in 1925. It was designed by Arthur Heineman, in the Spanish Colonial Revival architecture style. [1]
